In 1882 New Zealand issued seven different denomination typographical stamps (Scott 61-67) picturing Queen Victoria with seven different frame designs on paper watermarked with the widely spaced N Z and star (Scott wmk 62). The minimalist that the Scott Catalogue is, it only lists a total of four variations on just three stamps, and these only involve perforations. No other variations are mentioned by Scott. No die, plate, nor anything else. Not even a note, except for one stamp re-issued in 1900 with a different watermark (Scott wmk 63 - double-lined NZ and star) and five official overprints.

This particular violet two-pence stamp is perforated ten. The 2008 Scott Catalogue lists this used stamp at thirty-five cents. (The same stamp with a perforation of 13-1/2 has a $110 CV.) I used a gauge on several other Scott 62 stamps and read measurements of 10, 10-1/2, and 11-1/2. Alas, no perforation of 12. Thus, just by looking at this stamp one can not tell that it is, indeed, a major variation (not listed by Scott, but known by serious stamp collectors/philatelists.
