"These stamps were conceived and designed during internment in Stanley Camp in 1943 by Mr Wynne-Jones who had been Postmaster General at the time the Japanese attacked.
He had the idea that a commemorative stamp should be issued when Hong Kong was finally liberated. His idea was to have a design using the Phoenix as the symbol of resurrection from the flames and ashes of the Japanese occupation and also because in Chinese mythology the appearance of the Phoenix means the return of good government. He enlisted the help of Mr W. E. Jones, a fellow internee and a keen philatelist and an artist who had helped design the Hong Kong Centenary stamps of 1941. He elaborated the rough design into a large scale drawing. Mr Wynne-Jones and Mr Jones ran considerable risks in producing the full scale designs. When Mr Jones was working, pickets around his hut watched for the approach of any guards. The courage, optimism and faith in victory which led to this stamp issue provides an epic in the philatelic history of Hong Kong. Three essays were made. The first two “draft” essays were kept by W. E. Jones and later given to the King George VI for the Royal Philatelic Collection. The third, final essay was kept by Mr Wynne-Jones, who took it to England when he was repatriated and submitted it through the Colonial Office for approval by His Majesty the King.
