As I was visiting my girlfriend in Michigan over the break I had a chance to visit Ann Arbor Stamp & Coin ... he was mostly coin but I spent a nice hour perusing a couple of boxes of covers that he had stashed in the back ... picked up ~25 covers etc for not much ... they are mostly postal history and I haven't done any research on them yet.

This first set are all addressed to Miss Harriet Lawrence in Ypsilanti MI ... they span the fall of 1904 and are postmarked from El Oro Mexico. There were, sadly, no letters included ...

I picked out the covers with the best stamps and postmarks and left several behind ...

a bit of a mystery on this one ... addressed to Miss Grace Lawrence ... at the same address in Ypsilanti but I cannot make out a year on this cover. Also it's not handwritten but rather (poorly) typed and there is no return address ...

how very interesting! The first google hit when I typed "Harriet Lawrence Ypsilanti" gives me the wiki page for James Lawrence, a noted University of Michigan football player. While there is no mention of Mr. Lawrence working in Mexico, the article does mention that he had two older sisters named Harriet and Grace! The two sisters would have been ~28 and ~25 at the time of the covers ...

***update ... Miss Harriet Lawrence married Arthur Roy Wren June 20th 1906. The address for Mr. Wren from this source is Mexico City! So I suspect that the author is none other than Miss Lawrence's sweetheart!

my first google swipe at Cuthbert W Laing revealed this link which reveal that A Mr. Cuthbert Ward Laing was born in England, resided in Chicago for a time, and died in Ann Arbor MI ... which makes perfect sense as I found the covers in an Ann Arbor stamp store.

There is one more interesting coincidental link here ... if you notice in 1876 Cuthbert and Clara Laing had a daughter who they named Clara Irene Malcom. I have no idea ... I'm not my family's genealogical record keeper (not sure we have one actually), BUT some of mother's people were from Chicago, my mother's first name is Irene and her mother's maiden name was Malcom. Almost certainly a coincidence ... but still ... wouldn't that be cool!!

well got that wrong! After a thirty minute conversation with my father 1774739874 ... the Malcom name is on HIS side of the family! Also it appears that Clara Malcolm spells her name with an "ell" and the Malcom's in my family do not. So no astonishing coincidence today I'm afraid.
