Stamps of different Colours.

About 5 years ago I tried to sort colors for the type shown as a block of 4 and finally gave up.
Our club expert said to buy mint stamps of known color to use as a guide. My interest wasn't that great, so I simply donated all my dups while not worrying about color.

The cancel appears to be a type commonly used on parcels rather than letters.

On a some board there was a discussion of stamp colors.  I do not remember where.

First, to try to determine any color, the stamps should be scanned without glassine, or any thing else, covering any part of the stamp. Secondly, color on a computer is so subjective. There are too many factors involved, viewing screen resolutions, separate graphics card or on board graphics, computer settings, human eyes, etc..

That being said, my suggestion to you is do a little research and find what any differences there are in the stamp itself, perforations, plate markings, etc.. There are so many US web sites and information that the research should not be too difficult. This research should give you a definitive answer as to the Scott number.  You now have a positively identified stamp and the color as Scott gives it. Mount this stamp on an old black stockcard with no strips (I used to use the back of a single sided stock card).  Note the Scott number and the color Scott has assigned to it.  Do this for each stamp in a serie(s).  You will then end up with a "color chart" made up of original stamps.  Now, once that is done, you can now use that "color guide" to determine the color of stamp you have (better yet use the characteristics if any).  Also remember, stamps fade with time.
