St Ottilia on 3 1929 Saar charity stamps. She lived from about 662 to 720, and was the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. because she was born blind, hr father is said not to have wanted to keep her so she was taken to be raised by peasants. The legend goes that at the age of 12 she was baptised in a monastery and miraculously gained her sight. Her brother brought her home but her father in a fit of rage accidentally killed him. Ottilia revived her brother, and then fled to a cave which - again miraculously - suddenly appeared in a cliff beside the Rhine. After she heard that her father was ill, she went home to nurse him, and he finally reconciled himself to her and founded a monastery of which she became abbess. Her father was buried there. She subsequently founded a second monastery with an infirmary, and the waters of the local well were said to cure eye diseases.
