Can anybody with a specialized France catalog tell me the value of a used gutter pair for French Offices in Egypt - Alexandria, 1921-23 surcharged 10m on 25c blue (Scott #54)? (Asking for a friend. Actually, not a friend; I don't know the guy. But he posted this on one of my Facebook groups.)

Bought the 2 volume paperback 2018 Maury/Spink France Catalogue off Amazon, today, for $10 with free shipping. And for an extra 2.99, I got the Kindle version.

I found out these gutter pairs are called millesimes. That is the French word for vintage, and it refers to the fact that the printer added a number in the gutter to indicate the year printed (using only the last digit of the year). Millesimes were printed from ~~1876~~ 1891 to 1920.

I am still no closer to an answer to my original qu3stion, as this catalogue does not include listings for French Offices in _____, and Maury/Spink does not yet publish such a catalogue, as far as I am able to determine.

Sorry, I should have posted last night that your particular gutter pair was not listed in the 2018 Spink Maury. But it's a great catalog to have. I had gotten my Kindle version early last year and it's very handy.

The gutter pair shown is used, which means you will not likely find an actual catalog price for it.

I'll try to look for it in my Y&T, but it is an older catalog.

In the 2013, the mint single is €1.20 and the mint gutter pair (millésime) is €30. As expected, no pricing is given for used.

This seems like a lazy Scott-type blanket statement to me. While admittedly, I've only been looking a short time, but used examples are just not to be found, while mint hinged examples are plentiful.

Thanks for pointing out that note in Maury. I missed it. It might also be in Y&T but I didn't read the fine print (or any other print, for that matter, other than the catalog listing).

I think collecting used gutter pairs is an acquired taste (or when they fall into your lap -- that's how I started collecting used PNCs). Just like collecting used gutter pairs for the Farley's.

I absolutely believe the "same price as" is just a time/space-saver. I think someone who truly specialized in the used millésimes would know some of them are likely much harder to find used than mint -- but demand is also low for used.
