Japan is somewhat my second home (not the Tokyo area) and stamp collecting is very alive and well there with many brick & mortar stamp shops. They mainly collect their own issues and are very knowledgeable especially of the vast amounts of "Tourists Stamps" forged in the late 1800's. Since some "early" definitives were already covered, here are some of the better later issues.
1923 Great Kanto Earthquake Emergency Set The earthquake lasted about 8 minutes with a magnitude 7.9 and a 35 foot tidal wave. The strength was the same as the average estimate of the 1906 San Francisco quake but there, the main shock was less than 1 minute duration and no tidal wave. The fatalities in Japan were far greater.
