i would like to resurrect this train of thought from the ashes -
please bear in mind these are observations and opinions of my own.. i welcome discussion and thoughts but not personal attacks.
in my mind there are many types of collectors and while there is not right or wrong way to collect i think the various types enjoy the hobby from different angels.
for example -
a Hobby collector - enjoys the thrill of the hunt, the history learned, and loves to attempt completion. (read stampbears.net/thread/659/completest ).. this person is not always stuck on condition, value, or future value. they want to enjoy the hobby because the definition of Hobby is a relaxing activity that stimulated the mind.
The investment collector is (generally) a stark contrast to the hobby collector - they are very worried about condition, value, future value, and what they will get returned financially.. this is not a bad thing mind you - however as with investment in stocks it would seem to me that this takes a great deal of enjoyment out of the hobby.
of course we can not discredit the casual collector - they find some enjoyment on both sides of the fence but tend to turn over there collection frequently and may table it for years on end. (again nothing wrong here just an observation).
so feel free to add a "type" if you like and tell us what type you are and why...
as for me - i am a mix of all of the above i would even go so far as to split it up by percentages... 5% casual (i move stuff around a lot based on interest) 5% investment (of course i enjoy a good deal that i can benefit from in multiple ways) but i am certainly 90% Hobby collector ( i love my stamps and i love getting them, with out much concern about what others get out of my collection, as long as it makes me happy)
how about you?
