I came back because I hadn't intended to leave. Combination of the old board being hacked and a number of other issues in my life (health, accident, family...) made me take a break from this and other stamp forums.
The new board will take some getting used to (I'm a slow learner and stubborn when it comes to change). I primarily like the membership and the administration here. Folks are quite friendly and in general, not abrasive here. The admin/mods are both friendly and encouraging. I would say this site is much better moderated (in terms of keeping things clean/appropriate, and not tyrannical at all) than most. At many sites, there's often a non-trivial part of membership that is "going at it" with admin or one of the mods. I hope members can appreciate the admin/mods here. It's not easy being admin/mod, because you can't make everybody happy all the time.
Most of all, I like seeing the stamps. I don't mind the lack of information in the posts showing just stamps (although to be fair, the old board had plenty of posts showing both stamps with plenty of background information and tidbits). Just as you can see the stamps online or in a catalog, you can also get info from books/catalogs/online. I enjoy looking at other people's collections more than my own. I guess I'm weird that way. I like seeing the stamps posted here because they belong to someone who is a member. It doesn't matter to me if their collection is only a few dozen stamps or if they are mostly common. I just like looking at stamps that belong to fellow collectors.
Rayb has a good point regarding "show off". It does have negative connotations even here in the US. In the past, I've always been hesitant about showing people my collection or posting my stamps because of this. Here, however, there is no snarky comments about showing off, and in fact, posting is encouraged. I know of only one other major stamp forum that has been successful at doing this. Other stamp forums may encourage you to post, but invariably a bunch of snide comments will come up targeting certain individuals. Because of that, I never dared to consider posting my stamps -- that is until I came to this site (and that one other site).
Maybe we could consider renaming that forum/section "Show Us Your Stamp Collection"?
Also, Rayb makes another good point regarding confusion between the 2 sections in the "Show Off Area" forum. I, too, am confused. Is the "Topical Stamp Collections" section also restricted to personal collections? On the old board, that was not the case. But that section is in the "Show Off Area", I'm confused, too.
Just my thoughts...
