why so few women philatelists?

Personally I know more women that are stamp collectors than I do men that collect.

I reckon there are some exception to the rules, one of which is my darling young bride. She NEVER lets details get in the way of her facts. But then again, she was explaining a cooking recipe over the telephone yesterday with one of our daughters and gabbed for over two hours. Must have been SOME recipe.

Oh I agree that there are more men than women.. I disagree with the arguments put forth as to why this is the case...

I think the social aspect plays a small roll when you look at how often people (men or women) attempt to find alone time...

IMHO, discussions of gender, race, and age are of little import in one's hobby (regardless of what that hobby is). Yet, I am starting to see more articles in journals restating the obvious fact that the vast majority of amateur philatelists in America are senior Caucasian males. But, I am not sure what I am supposed to do with that information. Am I supposed to feel guilty that more women, people of other races, or younger Americans don't participate in the hobby? Am I supposed to go out and recruit women or people of other races and compel them to collect stamps and enjoy my hobby also?

A hobby is a personal choice and is something that provides an individual with some level of personal pleasure or satisfaction. When I attend a stamp show I don't count the women or assess the racial make-up of the group. I think everyone at these events share a similar interest regardless of their age, gender or race. Perhaps greater diversification of our (or any) hobby is good, and could add unique perspectives that one hasn't considered in the past. But, I am not sure that regurgitating the perception that amateur philatelists is a "boys club" of senior Caucasian anti-social males is the way to attract people to the hobby. Why don't we just leaving race, gender, age and social status out of the equation and promote the hobby for what is can offer each individual.

One of the very first things I do when I walk into a room is assess all the men and women.  That way I know whether or not to call them "Maam" or "Sir."

I think I have some thing to say it here
At first all should know that I am female, one of my friends who I made more than 10 stamps exchange with said to me after all this exchange " Oh, you are female!!!!!! And keep calling you (amigo) I should say (Amiga) "
Amigo means friend and Amiga means the female friend
I started collection stamps when I was 7 years old till today I have a lot of stamps and covers and friends but collecting stamps is a hard hobby it's not easy to keep updating with it
It need more concentration that I know very well that men have the ability more than women to do it But that don't mean women can't do it
Collecting stamps need to be with the hoppy all the time and women have a lot of reasons to get busy and to go far away from the hoppy about me I am soooooo far since I got mg twins but from time to time I contact my friends and keep updating my collection
As my friend said women prefer direct contacting in any hobby that thing support here but this hoppy need more than direct contacting and need a lot of take care of catalogues and I think a lot of women do not like that
I know very well there us many hobbies women are great in
In the end I am female and I am collecting stamps but I agree that men are more than women in this hobby

Most of my hobbies are male-dominated. Don't know why, just is that way. Trains, cars, models, stamps, ephemera, etc. The only one not completely dominated by men is flower gardening.

Now, why do I like those hobbies? I like machines, I like miniatures, I like things that took talent to create.

Otherwise, I'd have to sit here and think long and hard about this. And I'd probably put you all to sleep as I do it!
