Basque corsairs on a 1997 French stamp. Unlike ordinary pirates, corsairs were authorised by their home country to prey on shipping of enemy countries in time of war. If captured, they had the right to be treated as prisoners of war rather than pirates. The last recorded French corsair was a Basque - Étienne Pellot (1765-1856).
