Atlantic cod on a 1955 stamp from St Pierre et Miquelon. It was the cod fisheries off its coast that led to the first English colony in North America being established in Newfoundland in 1583. The English had been catching fish in those waters since the end of the 15th century and had previously established seasonal fishing camps there.
