Yes, you know in this Computer Tech board I've complained bitterly in several threads about Windows 10 upgrades.
This thread is my therapy so my hair falls out naturally instead of by my pulling.
Windows 10 Updates
The forced Windows 10 updates starting in September were disastrous for more than a few computers. My laptop would freeze, programs stopped working correctly... They did a quick update 2 weeks later that solved some problems and introduced new ones. After the last forced update last week, my scanner stopped working again. I've been able to help a few people with what I have learned, so in case anybody has been running into problems these past 2 months:
-- update ALL device drivers (Intel drivers are especially susceptible)
-- if you still run into crashing problems, reinstall device drivers one by one (this may even include your hard drive device driver! but make sure you back-up first; doing this actually stopped one friend's laptop from locking up at random times)
-- I have had to reinstall my Canon scanner driver each of the last 4 monthly updates
-- I had to completely disable Sleep on my laptop after updating my Intel video driver because I would get a locked screen with random pattern when the laptop tried to wake up (I configured all the Sleep settings to Hibernate instead, so the computer would wake up properly); I don't know if the latest Windows 10 update has solved this problem, as I'm afraid to try
Not everyone has problems, obviously. And not everyone has the same symptoms. For example, for my wife, her wifi adapter kept disconnecting.
But updating/reinstalling device drivers seems to solve most (not all) of the problems.
AOL Desktop
Mock if you must, but I'm a long-time AOL user, and liked the older AOL Desktop software better than other email software. Now, they forced everyone to update to AOL Desktop Gold. They told me it shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours to transfer all my archived emails (tens of thousands...). After trying repeated for 2 weeks and just watching the program "hang", I finally figured out after some "playing around" that it was indeed transferring all my emails but very very slowly. It took over 30+ hours, during which I had to leave my laptop at the office.
The main reason I liked AOL Desktop is that I could archive all my old emails immediately after reading them, and access them offline. The new Desktop Gold doesn't allow me offline access (even though they claim it does), and some of my archived emails are clearly missing. I don't look forward to spending another several hours talking with AOL Help to try to solve this problems.
What do I think about forced updates?
I guess I should be grateful that my laptop is functional enough now, unlike last 2 months. But with each Windows 10 update...
