Context - I have been reading and enjoying the "This day in History" thread.
stampbears.net/board/86/day-history

Question - Does anyone here have a topical collection along the "This day in history" lines?
I am contemplating an arts related "This day in history" topical collection - so births deaths etc of famous artists, writer musicians etc but also adding in when books, music, plays etc were first released/ produced- or major events associated with the arts - Just an idea at this stage and wondering if anyone here had a collection that was an inspiration for the thread?

I am asking this here but it may be need to be in the topical section. I could not see a proper place to put it in the "Topical Stamps Collections" section so hopefully it's not in the wrong place.

Already suffering from a bad case of collection creep as I am currently collecting Used only - Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Western Europe, and Scandinavia, from 1900 to date. Oh and I am interested in Artists and Art on stamps ... Trying to avoid becoming a WW collector.

What a great idea! As far as I know, I don't know of anyone who maintains a topical collection for each day of the year. Specific events, yes, but not a day-by-day topical. The closest I've seen are circular date cancellations to cover every date of the year. I would think it is "do-able" as a stamp topical, and one can learn a lot of history in the process.

Probably the easier way to start is with the commemorative stamps you already have, and create pages for each day or mark on an old calendar (like a checklist with catalog numbers). I guess when you are done, you will have a nice 366 page album!!!

Oh thanks khj, pleased to know that someone else thinks its an interesting idea. I think I like the idea because it would not mean pages of writing up - a little research and reading (the fun bit) then a concise explanation and the day would be done -

Once one year of days was completed I could set about doing another!

Great idea sharonb, all it takes is one member writing a idea and you got me thinking.
I wonder if a thread"this day in history" about famous people who collected stamps, lighthouse on stamps with a little background on who built it or what being a keeper was like in the old days, not sure if people would join in or even think it would be interesting.

I really like that you are inspired to do research about things that you are interested in. I enjoy reading about light house keepers and the interesting life was way back when. Hope to see you make new threads about what your interest in and remember you may light up a idea for someone else. And that is always great.

I think that's a great idea, sharonb, and you may just have set me off on another side collection. lol

As it happens, as khj mentioned, I have just started a postmark calendar. I made up 12 calendar pages, and I'm looking for nice date-stamped copies of only the Germania series. I printed out my pages last night, and I've got a pretty good start on the stamps. I'll start mounting those today.

As it turns out, the Germania stamps are just the right size to be able to fit one month of stamps on a page. Here is an example.
If anyone else is interested in starting a similar collection, I'd be happy to share my Excel file with you, to save you some time.

I assume I understand your quest - the date stamp has to match the date on the calendar.

crazyquilter, I think the famous people on stamps tied to This day in History would sure be interesting. How would you tie the lighthouses to the date? When they were built?

Oh crazyquilter, thats a great way to tackle it - or you could use the date for any major event associated with the lighthouse - ie when it was built, decommissioned, automated, saved ships etc too
