I've been following the thread stampbears.net/thread/18/philatelic-library?page=9 regarding peoples libraries and today it again made we wonder about the best catalogs for various countries.
So, two things.
1. I've been working to identify and acquire catalogs that show color pictures of every stamp for a country. Do you have any recommendations?
An example of one I use that does have this:
"Singapore Postage Stamp Catalogue 4th Edition from the CS Philatelic Agency" - also covers Straits Settlements and the Japanese occupation of Singapore.
When I found that "Collect British Stamps by Stanley Gibbons" mostly had all pictured I thought I would start getting Stanley Gibbons catalogs, but some of them definitely aren't any better than Scott. For example, "New Zealand 5th edition Stanley Gibbons" does not even come close to picturing all.
2. Best catalog in general for information about stamp issues for a country, regardless of whether it pictures all the stamps.
Some countries I'm interested in having something better than Scott or at least something to contrast to Scott are listed below. I prefer catalogs written in English, but it doesn't have to be (My German language Michel catalogs still help me identify stamps better than Scott):
Australia
Argentina
Canada
China
Czechoslovakia
Denmark
France
India
New Zealand
Panama
The Philippines
Sweden
Switzerland
Also, khj do you have Ma's Illustrated Catalog of the stamps of China, 1988 English version by any chance? I know that one doesn't have pictures of all the stamps, but has other valuable data I am looking for.
Here is the current running list, last updated 12/18/2020
Best catalog for each country or area, current favorites - OPEN FOR DISCUSSION:
Notes for France: for older Maury is recommended more generally, but after the Maury was bought by Sink they took out a few hundred pages of details for the older issues after the 2009 verion while refreshing the newer issues dramatically.
Yvert is recommended for newer issues more generally and is often the catalog numbers used on sites selling french stamps more than maury is.
