This is more of a FYI post and part warning:
The other day I mailed out a package to a SB member. I was out of stamps and had to take it to the post office. It was in a regular letter size envelope and weighed just under 2 oz. It was fairly flat and would have fit through the slit on their package identifier(?). There was a guy behind the counter that I had never seen before. He charged me for a package. I asked him to try putting it in the slit and he gave me some excuse about it being too firm for an envelope. I paid 4x more for package rate than envelope rate. If I had some stamps at the house and had put them on myself, the person receiving the stamps would have had to pay postage due.
We have new drivers on our delivery route. Every day is a new one. After 13 years with the same girl it is difficult to deal with these new ones. Anyways, I met them out at the box today and there was one of these orange package slips in my box. He saw me checking my mail as he drove away and turned around and came back. There was a letter size envelope of stamps with $3.27 due . I told him there was no way that envelope needed that much due on it. Now, my old mail lady would have left the envelope with a little brown envelope for me to put the money in and she would pick it up the next day. This guy wouldn't do that. Said it was the money or the envelope but he had to leave with one of them. Needless to say, he took the envelope and I will have some cash for him tomorrow or Friday.
The point of this whole rant is to warn all our members to make sure of your postage. Apparently the post office is trying to make money from non-flat and too-firm envelopes by making us pay package rate. If you are unsure of the amount of postage you should use, please take it to your post office. If the rate seems too high then split the stamps up into a couple of envelopes. Saves you postage and gives the recipient more mail
