On this day in history, 1945 the USS Independence was sunk by a Japanese U-boat in the Philippine Sea. The waters were shark infested so out of the 1196 sailors, only 319 would survive.
This is an ORIGINAL naval cover from the USS Indianapolis CA-35 stamped in the ship's post office July 4, 1933 in Annapolis Maryland. Several times it went to Annapolis to pick up President Franklin D. Roosevelt for trips down to South America. He preferred riding on the "Indy" to taking a plane as he loved the interactions with the Navy crews on these trips. He often times took part in ceremonies crossing the equator with the Davy Jones Locker type of activities. Here features two 1 cent stamps 1833-1933 Chicago Century of Progress with Fort Dearborn.
