This happens almost every year. Should I renew?
Long story, made somewhat not so long but still long...
Already disappointed by selective/delayed APS action against notable/influential members, I discontinued my membership a few years before 2010. Nasty APS in-fighting and the purchase/move to the former "Match Factory" pretty much sealed my decision. For years, I had convinced myself that my membership fee was for the betterment of philately, even though I was getting nothing out of it other than a pretty well-written society magazine, The Philatelist. But it became apparent that I was idealistic and mistaken.
Under new leadership and faced with dwindling membership, APS did make a move back to core philately & helping beginners and the "typical" collector -- but basically was still way out of touch with the average collector. Everything was geared to a very small establishment group and APS finances increasingly became a cookie tin for expensive pet projects that only had indirect connections to stamp collecting (or were completely irrelevant to the average collector). The move to out-of-the-way Bellefonte insured that I, and a greater percentage of collectors would have very little chance of visiting.
APRL seems very useful, but I've yet to use it in over 3 decades. I do applaud their efforts at digitization (about time).
I rejoined last decade for 2 reasons, in order of importance to me:
1) APS members received a very significant printshop discount (60%+ some orders) from OfficeMax/OfficeDepot. The savings for one print order was enough to pay for my annual membership.
2) APS made significant inroads into the modern computer age with website improvements and "dropping" in on stamp forums.
So why have I returned to struggling past 4 years with renewal?
1) OMX has discontinued NPO program. My financial savings incentive is completely gone.
2) The website doesn't really offer anything "special" to me anymore, and I rarely see them in stamp forums anymore.
The recent bankruptcy and lack of APS enforcement of establishment members continues the old protect the good ol' boy mentality. "Nobody" members get expelled regularly/quickly for miniscule financial non-payment of approvals with just an accusation and failure to reply (no court judgment needed), but establishment members can get away with 6-7 digit financial theft and all the APS will do is say let us wait until they get convicted. The latter has happened more than once!
The Philatelist magazine, while nicely put together, hasn't had articles that have interested me in over a decade. I don't think I've read more than 3 articles during that time.
I'm thinking I'd rather spend my APS annual $45 membership to join some smaller specialized stamp clubs instead.
What think ye?
Inquiring mind wants to know.
