I.M. DeBear, you might find this to be of interest too, the first article in this February 1972 issue from the American Revenue Association was about these kinds of stamps and some of the other details around their use (mostly this article is about the hand stamps that often accompanied the embossed attached stamp related to the cost of the parchment, etc., but you might still find it interesting).
For people interested in revenue stamps, The American Revenue Association has issues from 1963-2010 of their journal digitized and freely available to anyone. Here's a link: www.revenuer.org/the-american-revenuer-archive.asp They don't just cover American Revenues.
Worldwide collector of stamps and covers! I gave up on limiting to only certain countries. APS # 231136

Ty, I just called Eric, & am now the proud owner of this book, as well as Frank's book on similar stamps used in Ireland (Eric has one more copy of that one left.) Thanks for helping me scratch this off my list.

Some years ago I acquired a small stack of these embossed revenue documents, specifically 1886-1887 stock transfer contracts for 'The New Enfield Cycle Company'. The word 'Enfield' having its own certain mystique about it, a bit of research seemed to be in order. It turned out that the documents were executed in the very first year that the illustrious Enfield company was in business (the word 'New' having been removed less than a year after the company's founding.) I offered the two earliest documents for $100 each to a Royal Enfield dealer in Texas to display in his dealership ("They'd look great framed on the wall in your dealership..."). He naturally jumped at the opportunity, and I'm sure he and all his customers art still appreciating and admiring them to this day. It's always fun to bring together elements of this reality that really ought be together. Open bidding on eBay took each of the rest of the documents into the US$25-$40 range.
