Why I don't like some new US and Canadian stamps

I know there are a lot of opinions out there about this subject, but personally I have no problem with "non-traditional" subjects being honored on stamps. For better or worse, names such as Edwin M Stanton (which I plucked from thin air) and other long-dead statesmen, are meaningless to most people today. A non-collector may see a Batman stamp and decide he wants to save some and a seed is planted as a result. And of course making our mail a little more colorful is also a good thing in my book. Most non-collectors aren't going to have their attention grabbed by some long-dead politician. I do understand and respect the preference for more traditional subject matter, but I don't see most postal administrations going back.

Does it go too far at times? Maybe. Will the trend to continue or, more likely, progress further? Absolutely. But the great thing about collecting is that one can choose to collect those stamps or not. I say all this not being a collector of modern US or Canada, but I've set cutoff dates for most of my collecting areas once the stamps got too many or not to my liking. I've found it quite liberating to see a new stamp that I don't have to worry about collecting. The cost of keeping up with new issues could, over time, buy some pretty nice classic stamps that many collectors would enjoy owning. The cost of keeping up with new issues is a significant expense for many collectors, which of course means less money to put toward other stamps.

There are quite of few US issues that I dont care for, but I will pick on the two Christmas International stamps. Its fine if you were mailing a card/letter during the holiday season, but what about other times of the year. Also what if you mailing a cover to someone that doesnt celebrate Christmas.....

I agree that higher dollar stamps should honor someone or some event. The past few high value were not pleasant to the eyes at all, and they are still available from the USPS many years later....

I'll admit that I've always liked that $5 one.  Wasn't there a similar issue for $1 from around the same time, also engraved?

well I know I'm in the minority when I say that I actually like the Wave stamps ...

Wait a second. With Washington and Jackson on the same stamp, shouldn't it have a face value of $21?*













*Dumb Joke. For the non-Americans here, Washington is on our $1 bill and Jackson is on the $20 bill.

Well, I know the guy on the left is Washington - is the one on the right Andrew Jackson?  I wish they would always identify whatever is on the stamp, be it a person, a flower, an airplane or anything else!   That would make it easier for beginning collectors who don`t necessarily know anything about the country they are collecting yet.  I find that Australia does a champion job with that!  (And they have some hilarious names for their animals, too!)  And yes, I also don`t like a lot of modern stamps though I do like the two gray fairly recent American issues - the one shown above and another with a lot more engraving on it!
