Greetings Mr. rbridge28570 . I remember discovering old family correspondence early on in my stamp collecting career. Now all those old stamps are mounted in my stamp collection. Of course, that was before I realized an intact piece of correspondence is much more valuable (mostly sentimental value) than having the stamp snipped from the corner of the envelope. Rbridge- Congratulations on your find! The sentimental pieces are the best part of a collection.
Had a similar discovery a while back. My maternal side of my family is American. My Grandfather was one of those who island-hopped through the Pacific Theater in WWII. We found his letters sent home to my Grandmother during his service (also found a map of his travels, with notes). Also found a box with some of his memorabilia from that time, including scrapbooks, pictures, and aluminum bracelets made from the skin of a Zero (a Japanese bayonet from Okinawa hangs on my den's wall). He, like so many of his generation, would not talk about his service. I think that it haunted him. Being able to read his letters home gave us a slightly better picture of his experience during that time.

I have Japanese money, Pictures of Japanese women, letters, some sketches he did!!! He was a Fireman aboard an old Mettawee class Gasoline Tanker the AOG-39 USS Quastinet During the War!! A bunch of Navy News letters talking about the War and the USO Tours!!!! Medals and some of his Navy Uniform pieces. I want to make a shadow box to put his things in to preserve and show for the family!!!
Collect US Stamps used and mint, 1st Day Issues, WW Stamps dealing with Transportation, Animals, Just about from anywhere and anything !!
Great stuff ! Hold on to those, but I don't need to tell you that do I? I have some memorabilia (bayonets and such) from my Grandfather but I recall as a child asking him what it was like during the Korean war..he replied: "Go stand in a walk in freezer for two or three hours and then have someone shoot at you with a 30.06." I never asked about it again.
Although I never discovered any correspondence letters I have found a few online and bought them but they was just from family members that lived during the Civil War that I never knew obviously. I do infact have the very first letter and contents that I ever composed and mailed in my collection in 1979. perhaps I'll scan it some time.
I collect United States Classics, classic covers, Tobacco related covers & bill-heads and World fair ephemera (prior to 1930's)
My mother gave me my fathers WWII letters to her and to his family when I was twelve, a budding philatelist and not knowing any better. I liberated about half a dozen Peace tower stamps from the envelopes but didn`t read the contents until about 40 years later. Then I typed all the impersonal ones and sent them off to a University in B.C. which was collecting wartime letters from soldiers, together with a few photos, which they faithfully returned after scanning. I could kick myself now when I realized that for a few (still quite easy to find Peace Tower stamps) I made the contents of several of those letters virtually unreadable!
Now.... what do you think will be found in 2 generations time? hard drive, usb stick.... ? I would hope my son keeps the letters I have received from penpals....
I am a letter writer, snailmail addict. I send therefore I receive. I also manage a letter writing/correspondence forum called A World of Snail Mail. I sometimes post pictures on Instagram (username morgaine_does_snail_mail) Stamp themes - science, nature, postal history, maps, nice stamps.
I`m a little cynical about what will be found in 2 generations, what with all the different forms of media, and the difficulty of reading some that were only around briefly (8-track, floppies, VHS, tapes, etc.) Not to mention the difficulty of transferring email folders from one computer to another or after a necessary clean-out!
