The large "A" in the Circular Date stamp, I believe, stands for American Postal Machine Company .

The American postal machine was the only machine that used these flag cancels. There was 1 other but it is well documented and designed especially to run on a cancellation machine in Hawaii. There is also known a few hand cancellation devices documented that closely resemble the flag cancellation but I don't believe this is one of those? I hope this satisfies your curiosity some? I'll try to nail an answer down but that's the best I could do right at the moment. -Jeff

Kacyds had asked me earlier about that cancel with the "A" in the dial and ever since it has gnawed away at me so I decided to investigate.

Below is a link to great PDF of a book by William Barlow who is the Machine Cancel Society's President.

More directly, the middle of this document {link below} shows a similar one but displays a D rather than my "A" in the dial. It states that it is a type "F" dial. I can't elaborate anymore than this as I can find no other reference to these dial types. I'm actually going to join the Machine Cancel Society next month and I'll send them a scan and maybe the experts there can shed a little bit of light on the subject?
