I have been going through my early German stamps and noted that a few of my hyperinflation stamps have a break in the design. Scott doesn't identify this as a variety but given that it appears in three different denominations I think it is probably identified in the Michel catalogue which I don't have access to. Could someone confirm for me that this is a variety and if it adds any value to the stamps.

Since I didn't post the entire pages of Michel, here's the Cliff's Notes version for everyone else's education.

The rosette issues of 1923 (Michel 313-343,excluding 315, 320, 332) can be found in either flat plate or rotary printed varieties. These are generally distinguishable by the size of the printed area: 17.7 x 21.5mm for flat plate, and 18.0 x 22.0mm for rotary.

In addition, the flat plate printings often have a plate flaw, the "crack" in the rosette. The basic crack plate flaw increases the Michel CV by about 10-15x (for most, from €0.20-€0.70 to €2.80-€8.00).

There are also 15 known varieties resulting from attempts to repair the plate. These are generally worth about twice the basic plate flaw.

And finally, there are 7 varieties of the plate flaw that Michel characterizes as "stronger" cracks than the basic crack. The CVs vary wildly on these.

Bottom line, as with most inflation issues, the quality control was lacking...

On the first image it looks like the denomination was registered incorrectly and sits on the frame-line instead of between them? Do you see what I'm talking about? I wonder if that was intentional or not? I'll have to look for the rosette plate flaws myself too!

The inflation issues are so ripe with printing errors that there are numerous books written just to document the errors. There are single issues that are so bad, they have entire volumes to themselves!

With regard to the shifted denomination, Michel notes:

"There are also shifted denominations with all Flat Plate Printed stamps (shifting of printed sheets or plates)."
