Determining Value of Modern MH Stamps

I sold mint LH or H stamps at 70% of CV, and mint NH at 80% of CV., unless there are extenuating circumstances. You do know that Scott starts its MNH CV at double face value, right?

@craig, I know that Scott shows modern MNH roughly at twice face value with some exceptions. I know of a website where the auction for this weekend has many lots of modern Canadian mint never hinged block and singles with a face value of $60 and the initial reserve is set at $25. I'm sure that these lots will go for around $30.

Ah, but as soon as the backing is removed on a self-adhesive stamp it automatically becomes used and is no longer mint. For who is to say it was not taken from the face of an envelope? And as far as the backing goes, it can be hinged and once hinged it can only be referred as mint hinged either heavy or light. Am I right?

Absolutely not. If a water activated gum stamp does not have gum, it is used, and once used can no longer be called mint. (A gal can have carnal relations and not get impregnated, but she thereafter can never be legitimately called a virgin, nor mint.) There is no way of telling how the glue was removed and can only be assumed to have been used on an envelope. And, if a stamp went through the mail system, but not cancelled, it is still a used stamp. MNG (Mint No Gum) can only refer to a stamp that was never issued with glue.

Sorry, I'll have to disagree. If the backing is gone, it is no longer mint but it is still unused.

The US actually sold a linerless self-adhesive coil (the backing was the surface of the stamp underneath in the roll)! Its development by USPS was pushed by environmentalists. I thought it was a very innovative concept, but collectors hated it and it never caught on with consumers. Now if you can figure out the proper terminology for that linerless coil, then all the other mint/unused/used debates will seem trivial.

Back to the original topic. For modern H stamps, I would expect the retail value to be roughly 25-50% less than the NH stamp. From a wholesale perspective, if the stamp is still valid for postage, there is only a nominal drop (10-20%). If the stamp is no longer valid for postage, the drop in wholesale value is pretty significant -- anywhere from 50-75%. Anyone who has followed the UN wholesale market in the past 2 decades knows what I'm talking about. There will be variation based on country. Worst case is when it gets converted to per stamp price, disregarding face value -- that's when the market has bottomed out for that country. It's essentially 2 steps away from wallpaper.

For me, I pretty much use up any post-1940 hinged US stamps as soon as possible. There's just too many NH US stamps around, and really no point in trying to sell the hinged stamps. WW stamps are definitely easier to sell hinged.

As for a Self Adhesive stamp, If you take the paper backing off of the stamp, the stamp is no longer mint and becomes unused..... my2cents
