I must say I was really surprised on how many books there are in stamp collecting. Some of our members could open their own library lol

When I get my own room for my hobby I plan on having a bookcase just for my catalogs and books. Even the books I do not use very often, it will be nice to take them out of the rubber made tote and display.

I would like to start this thread by asking a few question about having a Philatelic Library.

1. Where did you find your books, online or store? Any books handed down from family member?

2. Which books or catalogs do you use everyday when you are sorting stamps?

3. Do you like a name brand catalog better than Scott?

This thread is for anyone to post questions or comments.

1. Everywhere -- inherited, purchased as a kid, bought at online at Abe books(now part of the Amazon Empire), bought at local club meeting, bought from stamp forum member, borrowed from local club library, then scanned the most important pages. On rare occasions I'll also check out a modern Scott cat from the local county library.

2. All are used at one time or another, but Scott 1982 world wide used the most, with Scott 2009 Classic and Michel Europa 1981 as backups.

3. See above ---Oh,-- Michel Specialized for Germany and Austria and SG British Commonwealth (1987) on occasion.

Least used are Zumstein Switzerland and Unitrade Canada.

PS: All bought cheap -- used -- yet all were in good condition.
The 82 Scott also serves as my inventory list -- circles being penciled in around the Scott numbers.

Online, store, stamp organizations, and gifts from relatives/friends/dealers. I don't recall any books handed down to me, although I did get my Mom's stamp collection.

Scott catalog is almost always my 1st choice, as I am most familiar with Scott and my "list" is based on Scott -- I have no need to go through my list and re-ID my stamps to other catalog numbers.

3. Do you like a name brand catalog better than Scott?

I will reference the other catalogs for items/info not listed in Scott, or when there appears to be erroneous information in Scott. For general WW stamps, I usually reference Michel first, as the Michel country/region catalogs list more stamps than Scott and will often have more information regarding the issue date of the stamp/item. For more detailed information, I will go to the specialized catalog for that country/area (e.g., Unitrade for Canada, FACIT for Scandinavia, SG for British Commonwealth, Y&T for France...)

I mostly got mine through trades and one amazing gift (Thank you again [unnamed donor] for the Unitrade i use it all the time!!)

i use the Scott US specialized, Unitrade for Canada, or Michael for Germany.

if i am looking at any other countries i use an older Scott. i tried an SG for a few months and liked the layout and detail on it but i find them hard to use with the countries i focus on.
