With the addition of Marshall Islands MiNr 3 I H from this thread, I'm coming close to having all of the German colonial provisionals in my collection (only missing Marshall Islands Minr 12 H). So, it's as good a time as any to post links to them all for anyone who's interested in a little light reading on this little piece of philatelic history.
By way of background, provisional stamps were frowned upon by the German postal system, and the colonial postmasters were discouraged, and in many cases forbidden, to create provisional issues. They didn't let this stop them, however.
The most common method of creating provisional issues was to bisect existing issues. There aren't a lot of forgeries of these issues, but illegitimate uses are common. The postal clerks or postmasters would often create additional copies after the period of use, very often with the original canceller, to serve philatelic interests. For this reason, certification is recommend for most of theses issues.
