Problem: Windows 10 may auto-rotate your jpeg thumbnails, also resulting in auto-rotation in some picture viewing/editing software
When it happens: when you transfer jpeg files from another device (including back-up external hard drive) onto your Win 10 computer
Solution: As of today, there is NO way to turn off this "feature" in Win 10.
Temporary Fix:
-- there is no way to prevent the auto-rotate, you can only manually undo it
-- VERY IMPORTANT, the jpeg file itself is unchanged by Win 10; it's the way the thumbnail/picture is viewed by Windows Explorer and some picture viewing/editing software that is affected
UNDO method #1 (simple)
-- in Windows Explorer, when you see a thumbnail in the wrong orientation, simply right-click on the thumbnail and choose rotate as needed
UNDO method #2 (method I use)
-- in Windows Explorer using Detail View, right click on the Column Title Bar, add "Orientation" column
-- the Orientation column will show the Rotate Flag and much Win 10 is auto-rotating the picture
-- select files individually or as a group, right-click and choose rotate as needed
-- in this method, you cannot see thumbnail, but since you can sort by Orientation, it is much easier to group pictures for a specific rotation change
Why correcting this is important:
-- it's causing a LOT of problems with 3rd party graphics software (tons of complaints on the internet)
-- it may cause some of your uploaded pictures to appear rotated by viewers
-- we really don't need MS to tell us which way is up, and they don't even do it correctly/consistently
Side Note:
-- unlike in Win 7, using the Windows Explorer rotate option does not make any changes to the file (only the way it is viewed/handled by Win 10 rigorous programs)
-- in Win 7, using the rotate option would typically increase jpeg size noticeably
Now I have a few thousand picture files to rotate...
