When out searching for stamps, like at a stamp show, or a bid board at a stamp shop or other connected places and you do not want to tip off other collectors about an item you suspect might be misidentified, use the following procedure:
Simply count the number of complete and nearly complete perforation arcs or holes along one of the side of your stamp you suspect (Works really great with Washing Franklin Head 1908-1923 series).
So then the 8 1/2 perforation will count 9
10 perforation will count 10
11 perforation will count 11
12 perforation will count 12
12 1/2 perforation will count 13
In practice, 10 perforation and 8 1/2 can be easily seen, really no reason to count.
11 and 12 perforations for me is where this system works best.
