First time I have ever created a thread so hope I get everything right. My idea for this is kind of a "journal" of my stamping adventures and a place to think out load about stamps and related issues and solicit opinions, input and maybe some stories along the way. If I have posted this in the wrong place moderators please move or delete as needed.
Today I was "fishing" on ebay as I do with some frequency (to much frequency according to my Wife) and I happened upon a very nice South African collection mounted on Scott country pages. The collection ran from about 1910 into the 1980's and was very complete with a nice selection of mint and used stamps. Most pages had more filled spaces than empty. I started thinking about how much I could expand my current South Africa holdings if I won this collection. Then I thought about how I could simply keep the collection intact in its current very nice album and simply continue it. Shortly thereafter my interest in the collection cooled.
When I look through my current albums I remember purchasing the pages new from Amos (I settled on the newly printed Minkus Supreme global pages for my world wide collection) in 2016, every stamp in those albums was inspected, examined, chosen, soaked (when needed), researched and mounted by me and thus I think of it as "my collection". I felt like this South African collection would not really be "my collection" as most of it had been put together by another collector. Logically, I know that almost all the stamps I procure were collected or gathered by others before I came to possess them but it seems for me at least the act of forming the collection "from scratch" (or at least mostly or fully blank pages) hunting down, handling and mounting each stamp is important to my collecting enjoyment.
Is this illogical? On the surface demounting stamps only to remount them on a different set of South African pages certainly seems illogical. I would be interested to know how others feel about continuing a "more complete than not" country collection started by another collector and what you believe makes your collection "your" collection.
