On this day in history, Virginia becomes 10th State.
On June 25, 1788, Virginia was admitted as the 10th state of the Union upon ratification of the US Constitution.
Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth the 1st by Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth after attempting to establish a colony in 1584. These attempts failed due to the lack of supplies. The entire east coast of America was at that time called Virginia.
Successful colonization did not occur in "Virginia" until the "Virginia Company" established by King James the 1st in 1606 started the first successful English settlement at Jamestown in May of 1607.
