Czech 1999 "JOACHIM BARRANDE AND CZECH TRILOBITES"

Joachim Barrande (1799 - 1883) was a French geologist and palaeontologist, his attention was attracted to the fossils from the Lower Palaeozoic rocks of Bohemia (Czech Republic). For ten years (1840 -1850) he made a detailed study of these rocks, engaging workmen specially to collect fossils, and in this way he obtained upwards of 3500 species of graptolites, brachiopoda, mollusca, trilobites and fishes.He was a fervent advocate of the theory of the catastrophes (as taught by Georges Cuvier), thus opposing Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Barrande's book described more than 4,000 fossil species, and it continues to be used as a reference book today.

Czech 2011 "Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761 - 1838)"

Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (born on January 6th, 1761 at Brezina Castle) was one of the leading scientists of the first half of the 19th century, with a special interest in botany, geology and paleontology, and is considered as one of the founders of paleobotany. He is the author of an extensive and precious collection of minerals, fossils and herbs that became the core collection of the National Museum in Prague, founded by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg.

The first stamp (known to me) shows a paleontologist has been issued in USSR on 1947. Actually it is a set of two stamps 30 kopejka(100 kopejka = 1 rubel)s, green and 50 kopeja braun. These stamps are shows A.P. Karpinskij, who is most known as First elected president of Russian Science Academic. Hovewer, he was also great geologist and paleontologist, who made some important discovers at Ural mountaints area of Russia.

The second stamp wit ha title "Greatest russian scientist bilogist-paleontolog: W.O. Kovalevskij" has been issued at USSR on 1952, with a value of 40 kopejka. This is actually the first stamp dedicated to paleontologist.

The fisrt stamp of scientists with a prehistoric animal fossiel on a backround has been issued in Romania on 1967, as part of set of famous Romanian people. Green stamp with a value of 40 bani shows Romanian biologist and director of Museum of Natural History Grigores Antipa. Some web sites and even philatelistic books/catalog mentioned this stamp as the first stamp depicted paleontologist on it. Actually, Grigores Antipa was not a paleontologist at all - he was the zoologist, ichthyologist, Hydrobiology, economist, ecologist, oceanology, museology. He founded the Romanian school of Hydrobiology, ichthyology and oceanology, pioneer in the field of museology, the author of modern concepts in ecology, biosociologiei, Bio biosphere. He was director of the Museum of Natural History in Bucharest, where he had an important contribution to the organization on a phylogenetic and ecological collections. As a token of gratitude for his work in the museum since 1933, Museum of Natural History bears his name. The missleading is caused by fossil of Dinotherium giganteum depicted on a background of the stamp. It is there just because it is the most impressive exponats of the museum.

Mary Leakey (6 February 1913 9 December 1996) - an eminent archaeologist and anthropologist, Leakeys discoveries were so significant that they forced scientists to radically change many long-held views about human evolution.
She was the one who discovered the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans. She also discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge. For much of her career she worked together with her husband, Louis Leakey, in Olduvai Gorge, uncovering the tools and fossils of ancient hominines. She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She also discovered the Laetoli footprints. It was here, at the Laetoli site, that she discovered Hominin fossils that were more than 3.75 million-years-old. She also discovered fifteen new species of other animals, and one new genus.
In 1960 she became director of excavation at Olduvai and subsequently took it over, building her own staff. After the death of her husband, she became a leading palaeoanthropologist, helping to establish the Leakey tradition in the field.
Mary died on 9 December 1996 at the age of 83, a renowned paleoanthropologist, who had not only conducted significant research of her own, but had been invaluable to the research careers of her husband, Louis Leakey, and their sons, Richard, Philip, and Jonathan.

Lev Semyonovich Berg (March 14, 1876, Bender – December 24, 1950) was a leading Soviet geographer, biologist and ichthyologist who served as President of the Soviet Geographical Society between 1940 and 1950. He also developed his own evolutionary theory (Nomogenesis) as opposed to the theories of Darwin and Lamarck.
