Phil , I commiserate. I have a lot of trouble with many of these unless the stamp is pretty good-sized. But even then...

The trouble I have is that I don't always get a good view of the connecting straight ray -- and in some examples in the watermark mat, it seems like the ray barely shows any kink. If the watermark is weak, it's hard for me to tell if it's a straight-thru ray or a kinked ray! The variations of the R and A are so varied, even within the same watermark, that I can't really rely on that to distinguish either.

Scott tries to make things more clear, but ends up compounding problems by "drawing" over the watermarks in an attempt to make the watermark more clear. The net result is Scott gives you the impression of distinguishing differences in the lettering between the 2 watermarks (e.g., you might think flat-top A vs pointed A, or differences in bar height) when it actually varies from one circle/oval to another.

I got to the point where I set aside my Argentina and decided to wait until one day someone comes up with a simple watermark imaging contraption for dummies. I've inhaled enough watermark fluid in previous tries on those watermarks. Some of those Brazilian watermarks on the definitives are also on my list of wait until...
