June must be the month for auctioning philatelic rarities. First it was the British Guiana 1c Magenta and the US #C3a Inverted Jenny plate block and, now, it’s one of the famed Mauritius “Post Office” stamps on cover. On June 26, Auktionhaus Christoph Gärtner GmbH & Co of Germany will auction off a Mauritius Scott #1 one penny “Post Office” stamp on cover and the opening bid is a paltry £4 million.
Here’s what Gärtner has to say about it:
1847, MAURITIUS "POST OFFICE" ISSUE: One Penny red-orange, first primitive printing, completely clear four margins. The stamp at top right of the envelope is tied by framed "PAID" handstamp in black to small-sized BALL INVITATION ENVELOPE. At top left of the envelope is a clear black framed "PENNY POST" local handstamp.
The envelope, addressed to H. Adam Esq. Jr., shows the black circular datestamp "MAURITIUS POST OFFICE / SE 27 1847" on reverse. The postmark confirms the use of the stamp on the very first period (7th day) of issue.
The correct postage on locally used envelopes was ONE PENNY, paid by the new "letter labels".
This prestigious gem is offered at the 50th Christoph Gärtner Auction - 174 years after charming Lady Gomm made this distinguished franking for a FANCY DRESS BALL.
Provenance/Biography:
1847 H. Adam received the envelope containing an invitation to Lady Gomm's ball
1899 Th. Lemaire bought the envelope from H. Adam
1899 W.H. Peckitt bought the cover from Lemaire
1899 H.J. Duveen bought the cover from Peckitt
1909 Peckitt again got possesion of the cover
1909 H.P. Manus obtained the envelope from Peckitt
1933 Auction: Plumridge & Co Manus Sale (lot 1): Purchased by Tom Allen.
193(?) Acquired by King Carol of Romania
1950 Sold privately by Rene Berlingin
1971 Stanley Gibbons Anphilex sale New York bought by Hiroyuki Kanai
1986 Consigned to David Feldman Geneva
1988 Sold to two professionals together with the Kanai collection
1993 David Feldman sale (lot 452)
1997 David Feldman SA private sale
2006 David Feldman sold the cover to Vikram Chand
2021 The cover is offered at the 50th Christoph Gärtner Jubilee auction
I don’t know about you guys but, if I had the money, I’d 1,000 to 1 rather have the Mauritius cover than the 1c Magenta, especially after Stuart Weitzman desecrated it with his initials and the outline of a shoe!
