I've seen lots of opinions on recent (past 100 years) subjects collectors have deemed overlooked by the USPS, from astronauts, to writers, to historical events. But, I was just wondering, which historical American figures, accomplishments, or events from the 18th or 19th centuries are deserving of commemoration on a stamp, which have been ignored?

As this question only just now popped into my head, I have not come up with a choice. But, I would like to hear others' opinions.

Indigenous rock art. It is an ongoing tradition, but much of it was produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Those that can be exactly dated and commemorated cross the line into graffiti, so maybe not so worthy of a stamp. Much of it is protected through secrecy, but there are some parks that protect and publicize it.

It is one of my topical collections. Most of the stamps depicting it are from Africa, some from Europe, Asia, Pacific, and South America. None is from the US, though Venda included a North American drawing in a set on the history of writing.

Rock art is under-appreciated and often vandalized. Celebration on a postage stamp might raise its profile and respect given it.

I collect each country, dead or alive, but focus on France, French African colonies, older German area, allegorical men, carnivorous plants, Vikings, rock art, engraved pictorials.

The first publication and distribution of the Montgomery Ward catalog (1872) and the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog (1893-1894). These catalogs completely changed the lives of families in rural areas, such as the plains, by giving them access to things, from farm tools to home goods, that they might not have otherwise had the opportunity to obtain, or could only have obtained with great difficulty. Even if they couldn’t afford to order anything, at least they had a ready supply of TP!

These two catalogs, and others like them, were one of the primary reasons that the US Parcel Post came into being.

Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. The two of them invented the UNIX operating system. Doug McIlroy could also be argued to be one of the inventors, he is the one who originally proposed UNIX pipelines and Rudd Canaday worked with Ritchie to implement the hierarchical file system for UNIX.

Dennis Ritchie also created the C programming language.

Ken Thompson is still around and working at Google, where he recently invented the Go programming language, Go has become a very popular language over the last few years.

Dennis Ritchie died in 2011 at the age of 70. He really needs a stamp! The others can wait since they are all still around.

Worldwide collector of stamps and covers! I gave up on limiting to only certain countries.

I remember the catalogues well. Here we had Sears and Eatons. Regular/Xmas/Easter issues.

Maybe Henry Ward Beecher and William Lloyd Garrison, ministers and fiery abolitionists.

Jonathan Edwards, whose sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is a stone classic of Congregational brimstone.

Lyman Beecher (Henry's pop, and Harriet's too), whose sermons and writings read as pretty bleak today, but he actually tried to free Evangelical Christianity from the predestinarianism that he believed might be making some people either atheistic or, literally, insane.

Those three are significant dudes in American history.

A long shot is Sutton Griggs, another minister, who could slip onto a Black Heritage stamp any time. If he's remembered at all, it's for a novel called Imperium and Imperio, about a Black Separatist state in the American South - pretty rad for 1899. As a novel, it's short on narrative development and long on intellectuals sitting around arguing, but it encapsulates quite a lot of the conflicting African-American social philosophies of the late 19th century.

Charles Brockden Brown was the author of what I believe to be the first American novel to gain much notice, Wieland (1798). It's a convoluted story in pure Gothic style of family entanglements, longing glances, and various kinds of mania. Ventriloquism plays a prominent role in the murder plot. I read somewhere that an instance of spontaneous combustion transpired too, but I never got that far.

A more conventional choice is William Dean Howells, author of The Rise of Silas Lapham - a gloss on the fast-rising tycoon class of his time - and many other novels. He's another guy who has been on many an "American Classics" list but I'm not sure anybody has finished one of his books since about 1911. But he did document the society of his time, and he was well known for using his prestige and influence (he edited The Atlantic for many years) to promote young American writers.

Dipping a toe into the 20th century, I'm really surprised that Theodore Dreiser has never been on a stamp. His tendencies toward Social Darwinism sound ugly today, and he was also a Communist for a while, but Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy are hard to ignore in American literary history.
